Right now I am reading The Running Dream by Wendelin Van Draanen. It's a great read! The story starts out with a young girl who is in a star track athlete...then she is in a car accident and one of her legs has to be amputated below the knee. Her running dreams are crushed. Along the road to recovery, she meets new friends and feels the support of old friends as she faces this new challenge. I highly recommend this book, plus it's on the Texas Lone Star list!

Last week, I got to meet Lois Lowry! She was one of the first to start the dystopian literature that I love so much! The first book in this series is The Giver and this is the fourth and final book. I started it yesterday and finished today...it was so well-written and enjoyable. It's told in three parts so that helped to keep the story flowing for me. I so enjoyed reading it and look forward to sharing this book with many students in the coming months. I've been reading Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein for the past couple of weeks. I have not had as much time as I want to read, but this book is great. The premise is that a British spy is captured by Nazis and has to tell her story. Reading about the Holocaust is always difficult for me because it's such a difficult topic, but I want to know what happens in this story. I would recommend it for 8th grade or higher. |
