The first book I picked to read was Zebra Forest by Adina Rishe Gewirtz. I know they say "Don't Judge a Book by Its Cover" but honestly I do. I chose it because of the unusual cover. I wanted to find out what the Zebra Forest was...and I did. It's a haunted, spooky forest behind the house of a family. Behind the Zebra Forest is a prison and one night there is a prison breakout where almost 50 prisoners escape! The family's life changes when one of the prisoners comes into their home and barricades himself for almost a month! It's a great book of relationship, suspense, and
It was like Christmas in the library last week as we unpacked and prepared 7 boxes of new books for the library! We had so much fun and are so happy that all the books are out and ready for students and teachers to read. Besides the tables above, we have two other carts full of new books and more boxes on the way!

One of the greatest things I have had the opportunity to do is work with the SBMS Writing Club. We meet every Tuesday and the students come ready to share ideas, write stories, and talk about contests. It has been a blessing for me and hopefully them too! Last night, three of our Writing Club members were awarded certificates at the Scholastic Awards Ceremony. It was a pleasure to be there.
As a special treat, Scholastic brought in author, Jennifer Mathieu, to speak to the students. She has a novel coming out in June and it looks like a great one! I have posted the cover above this post. Most of all, I enjoyed Ms. Mathieu's advice to writers: 1) Read everything you can. 2) Observe the world around you and put down your phone. 3) Write, write, write. It was very encouraging for the students and me to hear. Hopefully Ms. Mathieu can speak at our writing club very soon! Last fall, I had the privilege of meeting MIndy McGinnis in Austin at a book festival. She is a librarian in Ohio and this is her first book. I enjoyed this book from beginning to end! The setting is in Ohio and the water supply has run out for the cities and country side. Lynn lives with her mom in a house by a lake and they purify their own water for drinking, cooking, and bathing. Their lake is as precious as gold, so they must defend it with everything they have...which means using guns for protection. From a very young age, Lynn learns to shoot anyone who tries to take their house or water. She lives a very hardened life until some new people come into her life - Stebbs, Eli and a young girl named Lucy. I would definitely recommend this book! |
