Since I have been teaching 7th grade the past three years, I have not read all of the books that we study in 6th grade. This week I started reading Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry, a novel we are using in academic classes. So far it has been a very interesting book! Gathering Blue is a companion novel to The Giver, meaning it can be read as a "stand alone" novel. Several years ago, my mom and I listened to The Giver on a LONG car trip to west Texas. My mom normally does not enjoy fantasy books, but we were both hooked! Today, we still talk about listening to the audiobook on our eight hour drive and how It made the time pass so much quicker! So I guess if anything, I would say if you're having a hard time getting into a book, have someone you care about read the first few chapters aloud to you OR find the audiobook to spark your reading time. If it can work for my mom, who strongly dislikes fantasy, then it can work for anyone!

There is a great bookshop on Memorial and Dairy Ashford called Blue Willow. They have author visits, activities, and a brilliant staff. Tonight Tom Angleberger was signing copies of his new book, Darth Paper Strikes Back. I have heard great things about The Strange Case of Origami Yoda, so I am excited to read it! The best part of the night was when Mr. Angleberger taught us all how to make our very own Origami Yoda in just 5 folds. So much fun!
Divergent by Veronica Roth was a GREAT read. It was recommended to me by Mrs. H in our BDJH library. (She always gives me great recommendations.) Beatrice lives in a society divided by factions. Each faction values a character trait and live their daily lives in pursuit of the trait. For example, Beatrice was born in the Abnegation faction, so her family values selflessness. Well, when you turn 16 in this society, things change. the 16 year olds are given an aptitude test and then must choose which faction to join based on their test and personal preference. When Beatrice turns 16, who will she choose? Will she be loyal to her family or venture out to a new faction with different values?
I could not wait to find out what happened! When I got to the end, I wanted to know more, and luckily I found it this is the first of the series! Yay! Welcome to Ms. Smith's Book Blog! I love reading all kinds of books and will use this blog to let you know what I think of the books I read!
